Ashwin and Losliya shoot for a peppy, romantic music video

]

They both became household names and viral sensations on social media following their appearances on TV shows. And now, Ashwin Kumar Lakshmikanthan and Losliya have come together for a music video titled Sugar Baby . “Like most music videos, romance is the theme in this one as well, but this will be peppy and fun,” says Mageshram K, who has directed the music video along with Venkatesh. The director duo, who go by the screen name MagVen, have previously directed the yet-to-be-released film Ivan Dhan Uthaman, starring Mahat Raghavendra and Yashika Aannand.Osho Venkat, an assistant of Thaman, has composed the music for this song, which has lyrics by A Pa Raja , who wrote Ashwin’s chartbuster music video Kutty Pattas. Sandy has choreographed this number, which is likely to be sung by a popular star.Even though Ashwin has appeared in many music videos, Magesh states that this one will be different. He says, “Usually, Ashwin has a soft-spoken personality even in his music videos. But this one will be a total contrast; in fact, it will be as lively as Simbu from his early years. He will come across as a dashing personality… a total crush material. Even his costumes and mannerisms will be different from what he has done before.” Losliya will appear as a “cute, loveable young girl” who is wooed by Ashwin. “After her appearance on Bigg Boss Tamil, her films so far have not generated that kind of buzz, but this video surely will,” assures Magesh.They are also introducing Instagram celebrity Vriddhi Vishal, as a baby artiste, in this song. The team had shot recently inside a couple of school campuses, putting up sets resembling a college farewell celebration.

Rohit Sharma fit to lead India vs Windies; Bhuvneshwar Kumar, R Ashwin under scanner as Hardik Pandya back in radar

]

India’s white-ball captain Rohit Sharma is “fit” and ready to lead the side against the West Indies in a six-match white-ball series starting February 6 with the three ODIs in Ahmedabad.

However, the team selection meeting, which is set to happen this week, will be an interesting one as some senior players like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravichandran Ashwin, after their indifferent performance against South Africa in their 0-3 ODI series defeat, will come under the scanner.

But Rohit is ready to lead the side after a left hamstring injury ruled him out of the South Africa tour. The T20 matches against the Caribbean team are set to be held from February 16 to 20 in Kolkata.

“Rohit is fit and available for the series against the West Indies,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“By the time, the West Indies series starts, it will be more than seven and half weeks of rehabilitation and recuperation for Rohit.

“He is already training in Mumbai and is expected to be in Bangalore for the fitness test and get a formal okay from the National Cricket Academy,” the source informed.

Rohit set to be named Test captain too

It is almost certain that for the time being, Rohit will be named the Test captain although BCCI will be looking at other options considering his workload and the responsibility that comes with leading India in two back-to-back World Cups in 2022 and 2023.

It is understood that KL Rahul’s first stint as captain hasn’t gone as per expectations and for now, he will have to remain an apprentice under Rohit till he is seen to be ready to lead the national team in near future.

Under Rahul, India lost all four international games in South Africa and for men who matter in Indian cricket, he hasn’t exactly come across as a proactive captain.

It is understood that Rahul’s performance as Lucknow Super Giants captain will be keenly monitored during this edition of the IPL.

Hardik Pandya’s comeback

Hardik Pandya has been bowling in the nets and even though it is not clear whether he can bowl full tilt but Venkatesh Iyer’s relative inexperience at No.6 and Rahul Dravid’s admission that the colourful Baroda man was missed, can pave the way for his comeback against the West Indies.

“You have to remember after the T20 World Cup, Hardik was dropped and not rested because of his fitness. The selectors wanted to send him a message after his underwhelming show at World T20 but he is too good a player to be kept out for long.

“If not against West Indies, then he will surely be back against Sri Lanka,” the source added.

Ravindra Jadeja also seems to be close to attaining full fitness and will play either against West Indies or in the next assignment against Sri Lanka.

Bumrah might be rested

Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management is paramount for this current Indian team and there is a possibility that he might be rested for the six matches.

This is after Bumrah played all six games in South Africa which, which included three Tests and three 50-over games, and sent down the highest number of overs (104.5 overs in Tests and 30 in ODIs).

However, Bhuvneshwar, whose form has tapered off, might be dropped while Ashwin might get one more series as the South Africa white-ball leg was his comeback in ODIs.

The likes of Avesh Khan and Harshal Patel could once again make it to the T20 team.

India may try different options to avoid more humiliation; spotlight on Bhuvneshwar, Ashwin

]

Indian team’s strategy is expected to undergo paradigm shift with some players getting a subtle yet stern message to lift their games as they face an embarrassing possibility of a clean sweep against South Africa in the third ODI, here on Sunday.

India’s strategy looked completely out of sync with modern day white ball game as the batters failed to keep the momentum in the middle overs and more importantly the bowlers, save Jasprit Bumrah, looked club class and without ideas of getting breakthroughs.

In two matches, India have been only able to pick up seven wickets – four in the first game when Proteas batted first and only three in the second.

Ravichandran Ashwin and especially Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the two senior-most bowlers looked far from threatening and the young Proteas batters like Rassie van der Dussen, Janneman Malan along with seniors like Quinton de Kock have feasted on the pedestrian stuff dished out by them.

With the two having flopped completely, it needs to be seen whether Rahul Dravid, the man who is currently calling all the shots as far as tactics is concerned, takes a dim view and at least try out Jayant Yadav and Deepak Chahar in the next game which would lend some freshness to the attack.

Worse, the first two games were played on a Boland Park strip that didn’t have a lot of pace and bounce and even skipper KL Rahul admitted that conditions were more familiar with what they get back home, compared to what they are used to getting in South Africa.

However at Newlands, there will be more pace and bounce on the track and the Indian team that has been perennially struggling would want to avoid the ignominy of a 0-3 loss.

For skipper Rahul, the whole tour, save his match-winning hundred in the first Test, has been a nightmare. Although he is being seen as a long-term future leader, there hasn’t been any spark whatsoever in his leadership that would make anyone sit up and feel that he is the one cut out for the job.

There hasn’t been any tactical improvisations in the two games so far which would inspire confidence in his leadership abilities.

Add to that, his own style of batting at the top of the order is outdated in modern ODIs and his inability to rotate the strike for the better part is also creating pressure on the later batters, who aren’t as adept at maneuvering the strike.

It is a foregone conclusion that once Rohit Shara is back in action, Rahul will lose his spot at the top of the order with Shikhar Dhawan scoring runs and at a better clip compared to his younger partner.

Virat Kohli’s energy missing in Rahul

Virat Kohli may have scored 51 in the first game but what is visible is his lack of energy on the field having been sacked from ODI captaincy.

He is doing his routines without getting too involved. While it is fair that he wants Rahul to grow into the job somewhere the infectious energy that he brings into the field and which normally rubs off on other younger players has been missing in the two games.

Rahul would do well to imbibe some of it from his former captain.

‘Mr’ and ‘Mr’ Iyer

The two Iyers – Shreyas in batting and Venkatesh as an all-rounder haven’t yet set the stage on fire and the main problem has been their inability to force the pace in the middle overs.

England became a solid ODI outfit by scoring consistently in the middle overs and this young South African team has also followed that template in the series which is missing in Indian game.

In all, massive improvement required in order to be competitive.

India: KL Rahul (captain), Jasprit Bumrah, Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, Md. Siraj, Jayant Yadav, Navdeep Saini.

South Africa: Temba Bavuma (captain), Keshav Maharaj, Quinton de Kock (wicketkeeper), Zubayr Hamza, Marco Jansen, Janneman Malan, Sisanda Magala, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Wayne Parnell, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne.

Match starts 2 PM IST.

31 spotted deer died in six months inside IIT-M, autopsy done on only 15: RTI

]

As many as 31 spotted deer and four blackbucks died inside the campus of Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) between July and December 2021, showed data obtained by activist R Ashwin Kumar from the office of the Wildlife Warden under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005.

As per the reply sought by the activist, while autopsy was conducted on all the four blackbucks that died in July, September and November, only 15 of the 31 dead deer were subjected to post-mortems.

Three of the post-mortems were completed by the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) in Veperi and 12 by the veterinarian of the Chennai Wildlife Division. For the blackbucks, one of the post-mortems was conducted by TANUVAS and three by the veterinarian at Chennai wildlife division.

The report added that three of the spotted deer died due to plastic/polythene indigestion, two of them due to tuberculosis attack, two due to dog bites and two due to weakness. The post-mortem reports of the blackbucks are still awaited.

Further, it added that none of the spotted deer or blackbucks died due to accidents in the six-month period.

IIT Madras came under the scanner after reports surfaced that several stray dogs housed in the dog shelter located inside the campus had died.

Health Minister Ma Surabmanian in October 2021 paid a visit to the shelter area and informed the media that 56 of the 188 dogs have died in the last one year.

He added that the IIT-M authorities had informed him that 55 deer have died at the campus owing to dog attacks since 2018 and hence the dogs were kept inside the shelter to protect the deer population.

Speaking to indianexpress.com, Arun Prasanna, the founder of People for Cattle in India (PFCI) who had filed a PIL on this at the Madras High Court in 2021 said the data exposes the management’s inability to maintain a secure environment for animals like blackbucks that are protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act.

“We sought the data of deer that died between July and December 2021 inside the campus specifically because the dogs are already confined in the shelter and hence dog bite cannot be cited as the reason. The RTI shows that despite dogs not being there, deer deaths have happened,” he said.

He added, “Of the 31 spotted deer, the post-mortem was conducted only on 15, what happened to the rest of them? This is a very serious issue. The management is trying to cover up something, there is no transparency. If the same had happened inside a wildlife sanctuary or a park, would the forest department have remained silent?”

Arun said the authorities are more focused on creating better infrastructure rather than taking adequate care for the welfare of deer. “It’s only a matter of time for the authorities to make IIT-M a deer-free campus just like they had made it a dog-free campus,” Arun added.

The activist added that the case is coming up for hearing Wednesday at the High Court and they are planning to bring the issue to the notice of the Chennai Commissioner as well as push the Forest department to conduct an inquiry into this issue.

How Can Universities Bridge The Gap Between Academic Curricula And Industry Needs?

]

Engineering is an ever-evolving industry, and academic curriculums face the growing challenge of keeping up with the times and making sure their students develop the skills they’ll need during their careers. The current disconnect between academia and industry is resulting in only a fraction of engineering graduates finishing university with the skills and knowledge the industry requires. With engineering being the most popular field of study in the country, it is imperative for the issue to be addressed. Republic Media Network has partnered with Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham School of Engineering to bring you this episode of Shaping India’s Future, hosted by Amita Wadhwa. This week’s panel features Dr. Sriram Devanathan, Head of the Center for Excellence in Advanced Material & Green Technologies and Professor and Chairperson for the Department of Chemical Engineering & Material Sciences, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University; Mr. Ashwin Kumar, Alumni, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University; Professor Geeta Bhatt, Academician and Director, Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board, University of Delhi, and Former Member of the Academic Council; and Vikas Singh, Economist and TedX Speaker.

These special guests discuss the measures that need to be taken by universities to make sure that their curriculums prepare students for the evolving field. They highlight the importance of adaptability, interdisciplinary learning, practical skills, and balancing specialisation with holistic industry knowledge. Furthermore, student internships, research partnerships, and other collaborations between companies and universities are vital to the development of students as they give them unmatched experience of what awaits them in their careers.

Dr. Sriram Devanathan and Mr. Ashwin Kumar provide great examples from Amrita Viswa Vidyapeetham University which highlight some key measures that institutions should take and students should look for to be industry ready. For example, Mr. Kumar describes how networking opportunities at the university led to him getting his first job in the industry.

Ultimately, universities need to provide students with opportunities to expand their experiences, make them great team players, understand the nuances of the industry, and develop a proactive attitude towards their learning. These factors and more are discussed in this episode, giving students and universities great insight on how to develop an employable workforce.

IND vs SA, 1st ODI: Venkatesh Iyer makes debut as Ashwin returns to XI; Shreyas Iyer to play at no.4

]

Venkatesh Iyer makes his ODI debut for India in the first ODI of the series against South Africa in Paarl. The all-rounder made his maiden international appearance in November in a T20I against New Zealand and received his first ODI call-up for the South Africa series. Iyer received his ODI cap from former captain Virat Kohli.

During the toss, KL Rahul also confirmed that Shreyas Iyer will take the number 4 spot in the XI while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Shardul Thakur lead the pace attack. Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal, meanwhile, will be a part of the spin-bowling attack in the Paarl ODI.

Team India is making a return to ODIs for the first time since late July last year. Rahul is leading the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who misses out due to fitness issues. The first ODI in Paarl also marks India’s first appearance in the fifty-over format since Rohit succeeded Virat Kohli as full-time limited-overs captain.

India will be aiming to put behind the 1-2 loss in the Test series against South Africa, as a number of ODI regulars including Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar make a return.

Earlier, Rahul had said that the pitch at Boland Park looks to offer a lot more to spinners in comparison to the pitches throughout the Test series.

“We have practiced for a couple of days at Boland Park and the pitch does look like it might offer a lot more for the spinners than what we saw in the test series,” Rahul told reporters.

“We have quality spinners. Ashwin is coming back into the one-day team and we all know what quality he brings. And Chahal has been a great performer for us for a number of years.

“If there is any help from the pitch, I know these two can exploit it. So they become really important for us.”

Here is India XI:

KL Rahul (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant(w), Venkatesh Iyer, Shardul Thakur, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal
