Jan Blachowicz is now possibly the next in line to Jon Jones and the UFC light heavyweight title, thanks to his first-round knockout win over Corey Anderson in the main event of UFC Rio Rancho.

Anderson entered tonight’s bout riding a four-fight win streak. He scored dominant decisions over Patrick Cummins, Glover Teixeira and Ilir Latifi over the past couple of years. But his momentum soared at UFC 244, where he knocked out the rising prospect Johnny Walker in just over two minutes.

Despite a rough start to his UFC run, Blachowicz won four straight in 2017 and 2018 before suffering a third-round TKO loss to Thiago Santos almost exactly a year ago at UFC Prague. Following that loss, Blachowicz rebounded with a second-round knockout of former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold before a lackluster split decision win over Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at UFC Sao Paulo in November.

This was a rematch of the pair’s initial meeting at UFC in 191 in September 2015, which saw Anderson score a unanimous decision win. And both men entered tonight looking for the win that would elevate them into the role of title challenger.

It didn’t take long for Blachowicz to get redemption and make his case for the next title shot, as he connected with a right hand that put Anderson out for the first-round knockout. And following the fight, Blachowicz had some words for the UFC’s 205-pound champion, who appeared to be impressed with Blachowicz’s performance.

JAN BLACHOWICZ TURNS THE LIGHTS OFF IN NEW MEXICO!!! WOW!! KNOCKS OUT COREY ANDERSON IN THE FIRST. His boxing is legit. I know there’s no heat for a Jon Jones title fight, but I’d be interested. Jan’s hands are real. — Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) February 16, 2020

Blachowicz starches Anderson in the first round! Blachowicz walks over to the side of the cage where Jon Jones is sitting and calls him out! Wow! #UFCRioRancho — Marc Raimondi (@marc_raimondi) February 16, 2020

Oh snap. Jan Blachowicz just knocked out Corey Anderson in the first round. And then walked over and pointed at Jones and Jones seemed to love it. That was it, Jan. Well done. — Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) February 16, 2020

Boom 💥 I called that one #UFCRioRancho — Niko Price (@Nikohybridprice) February 16, 2020

Damn. Corey Anderson threw that kick so naked… #UFCRioRancho — Mike Jackson, Esq. (@TheTruthJackson) February 16, 2020

Jan Blachowicz with the big-time knockout of Corey Anderson. Stares down Jon Jones. That’s the moment he needed to potentially steal Dominick Reyes’ rematch. #UFCRioRancho — Mike Bohn (@MikeBohnMMA) February 16, 2020

MONSTER right hook! And just like that, Jan Błachowicz KOs Corey Anderson…then has a nice little discussion with the champ, Jon Jones, who’s sitting cageside. #UFCRioRancho — Shaheen Al-Shatti (@shaunalshatti) February 16, 2020

Jan Blachowicz knocks Corey Anderson out colllld?? pic.twitter.com/Yytt3d0S32 — Ben Fowlkes (@benfowlkesMMA) February 16, 2020

Ohhhhhhhh… Jan sleeps Anderson in the first round.. Wow. Don’t let that guy connect. Upsets and snaps Anderson’s streak. That was just the kind of win he needed to possibly earn the next shot. Damn… #UFCRioRancho — Drake Riggs (@DrakeRiggs_) February 16, 2020

Jan is undefeated in rematches now… First time vs. Manuwa and now Anderson. He’s performed considerably better in both of them as well. — Drake Riggs (@DrakeRiggs_) February 16, 2020

Blachowicz to Jones: You promised me that on the show when I met you. Let’s do this. Tell me when. Tell me the place and time. #UFCRioRancho — Marc Raimondi (@marc_raimondi) February 16, 2020

Rockhold, Souza, Anderson. Solid trio but is that enough to earn a title shot at LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT? Oof, just not sure for Blacho. #UFCRioRancho #ufc pic.twitter.com/GdptMWCnHN — Jason Burgos (@CheapSeatsChat) February 16, 2020

Jan Blachowicz Ko’s Corey Anderson in the first round. Jon Jones in attendance. Next fight to make.#ufc #ufcrds #UFCRioRancho #ufcdaznitaly — MMANARCHY (@mmanarchy) February 16, 2020

A year ago Jan got finished by Thiago Santos. He still needs to win another fight to earn a title shot in my opinion. If I were Jon I wouldn’t fight anyone. I’d move up to Heavyweight. If things don’t go well, he can always go back to 205. #UFCRioRancho — Teech (@whitetrashteech) February 16, 2020
