The Met Gala, a.k.a. celebrities’ annual excuse to do the most (or the least, depending), has arrived after its postponement last year due to COVID-19. The star-studded affair usually falls on the first Monday of May, but was pushed to September this year. Last evening’s theme was inspired by a two-part upcoming exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum that includes “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” and “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” In other words, attendees were given the suitably vague prompt of “American fashion.” As is usually the case for the Met Gala, there are those who understood the assignment and those who simply did not. We’ll let you be the judge of who lands in which camp.

Met Gala 2021 Red Carpet: See Every Celebrity Look, Outfit & Dress Here

The Met Gala is typically held on the first Monday in May, but this year, the event was postponed due to COVID-19 and fell right in the middle of fashion month—meaning the stakes for stellar style on the red carpet were especially high. Last night, September 13th, fashion’s biggest night was held at its usual location: the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The gala was in celebration of the Costume Institute’s newest exhibition, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which opens to the public in the Anna Wintour Costume Center on September 18th.

On the red carpet, the celebrity guests embodied the theme of American style, from flashy, star-spangled ensembles, to more discreet nods to Americana motifs. The Met Gala’s red carpet has a history of creating memorable outfits—remember Rihanna’s high-fashion Margiela pope look from 2018?—and this year was no different.

As for who was on the guest list last night? Co-chairs this year included Billie Eilish, Timothée Chalamet, Naomi Osaka, and Amanda Gorman, but there were plenty of other Hollywood A-listers walking the famous Met steps. See stunning Met gala red carpet looks from Rihanna, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Simone Biles and more of your favorites, exclusively on Vogue.

The Met Gala 2021 Top Celebrity Couples

The Met gala guest list was star-studded this year, which obviously means there were plenty of celebrity couples walking the carpet. While the Met gala 2021 did look a little different this year with COVID-19 restrictions in place, it was still a glitzy affair. A-listers threw on their best (American-inspired) couture for the occasion, and the celeb couples looked cuter than ever. What can I say? Hot celebrities look hotter when they’re a couple. It’s just science. I don’t make up the rules!

Want proof? Behold the hottest, cutest, prettiest (insert adjective here) celebrity couples who attended the Met gala 2021. BRB, admiring them all as I sit on my couch in sweatpants.
