Poco F3 GT quick review: Worth the wait and hype

Poco has introduced the Poco F3 GT in India, almost three years after the introduction of Poco F1, and the successor might end up becoming a bigger hit. The Poco F3 GT has been positioned to compete with the OnePlus Nord 2 in the mid-premium segment, but will also challenge gaming smartphones from Asus ROG series. Poco F3 GT also marks the beginning of company’s push towards more premium products. It has many firsts for Poco first phone with an AMOLED display, first to support 67W fast charger, first to have shoulder buttons and so on.

Poco F3 GT price in India has been set at Rs Rs 26,999 for 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant, Rs 28,999 for the 8GB RAM and 128GB storage variant, while the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage variant of the phone will cost Rs 30,999. This is definitely more than what you would pay for any other Poco phone in the country but, impressive for what’s on offer. It also gives OnePlus Nord 2 a genuine competitor.

We will talk the performance and other aspects in our detailed review, I have used the phone for few days now and here are my first impressions.

Poco F3 GT quick review: Design

The Poco F3 GT is undoubtedly the most premium smartphone to come from Poco. It has a glass back, metal frame and an exuberant design which is further enhanced by the Gunmetal Silver colour variant I have. This one doesn’t catch any fingerprint smudges and that should also be the case with the other Predator Black variant. However, that one seems to have a more reflective rear panel.

The Poco F3 GT is 8.3mm thick and weighs around 205 grams. This makes the Poco F3 GT thick and bulky but, if you compare it to a phone like ROG, Poco has done a good job. The sad part is you don’t get a 3.5mm headphone jack despite that thickness. There is a 3.5mm to type-C USB adapter inside the box.

A major highlight of the Poco F3 GT are the two pop-up shoulder buttons that come out when you unlock them. They have excellent response rate, almost to the point where you feel like having an unfair advantage over competitors while playing Call of Duty Mobile.

Poco F3 GT quick review: Display

Poco has also upped its game on the front and has equipped the F3 GT with most things you can ask for. The smartphone features a big 6.67-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, HDR 10+ support and DC dimming. On top of it, this is a 10-bit panel so you get really vibrant colours. The phone is also protected by Corning Glass 5.

The bezels around the display are thin. But, I couldn’t stop imagine how beautiful this phone would have looked with an edge-to-edge display. Sadly, that’s something you can’t do with a phone designed for gaming.

The hole punch cut out for the selfie camera is small but, has a thick black ring around it which makes it look bigger. Also, Poco could have gone for an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Poco F3 GT quick review: Performance

The Poco F3 GT is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC. It is the same chipset that powers the OnePlus Nord 2 (albeit a tweaked version) and is becoming the go-to choice for smartphone makers in the mid-premium category. This is a decent chipset and handles most tasks seamless but, also seems to have some limitations.

I didn’t get an option to run COD at the maximum frame rate and graphics. Also, the phone did get slightly warm while clicking features. Having said that, these are just early days and I will be testing the phone further over the next few days so wait for our full review for the final verdict on the Poco F3 GT.

Two features that truly stand out from the performance point of view are the dual stereo speakers and the shoulder buttons. The speakers on Poco F3 GT are genuinely loud and clear. It should excite gamers as well as users who stream content on their phones. The shoulder buttons, as I mentioned earlier, have a great response rate. They can be mapped from Game Space and used within the game to gain advantage over other players.

Poco F3 GT quick review: Camera

Another area Poco seems to have done some work, and it shows. The Poco F3 GT comes with a triple rear camera setup which includes a 64-megapixel main shooter, an 8-megapixel ultrawide shooter and a 2-megapixel macro sensor. On the front, you get a 16-megapixel selfie shooter.

The camera app is full of options like Photo, Portrait, Night Mode, Vlog, Long Exposure, Dual Video and Clone, among others. The rear camera can record 4K videos at 30fps while the front is restricted to 1080p at 30fps.

I clicked a few images using the main and ultra-wide angle lenses of the Poco F3 GT. The results seem fine. The close-up shots were sharp, landscape looked pretty and even the wide shots retained a lot of details. You can see few image samples below.

The front camera is probably one weakness of the Poco F3 GT. The selfies were burnt on many occasions and the skin tones were nowhere close to what you expect them to be. Of course, I will be spending more time with the Poco F3 GT and stay tuned for India Today Tech’s detailed review for more on the camera.

Poco F3 GT quick review: Battery

Poco F3 GT packs a 5065mAh battery which should be more than enough for most users gamers or not. Poco is shipping a 67W fast charger with the phone which is quite remarkable. Even the more premium Xiaomi phones have failed to do so.

It is also using a different L-shaped charging cable which makes it more convenient to charge the phone while gaming.

Poco F3 GT: First impressions

The Poco F1 became a cult among smartphone enthusiasts and made the smartphone maker an instant hit in India. The Poco F3 GT has the potential to start a new chapter for Poco which may see it compete with OnePlus more aggressively than before. While it has been promoted as a gaming smartphone, the Poco F3 GT is a lot more than that.

The smartphone offers a lot of impressive features, has been priced brilliantly, emerges as a capable competitor for the OnePlus Nord 2 and was definitely worth the hype. More on it in our full review. So, stay tuned!
