Business Proposal season 2 release updates: Will there be a second season?

Business Proposal is one of the best K-Dramas on the streamer right now. The first season just wrapped up on April 5, and viewers are wondering if there will be a second installment. We shared everything we know about a potential Business Proposal season 2 right below.

Since its premiere on Netflix, the Business Proposal has created a nonstop buzz. People can’t stop talking about the romantic comedy and the beautiful love story between the two main characters, Shin Ha-Ri and Kang Tae-Moo. The side characters’ love story was also exciting to watch.

From Itaewon Class to A Business Proposal, webtoons drive K-drama craze

There’s a new word fast gaining currency in the entertainment lexicon webtoons. And the Korean industry is showing the way by adapting the digital comics meant to be read on smartphones for its many popular shows, right from office romance What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim? to zombie spectacle Kingdom.

The transition of stories from smartphone graphics to small screen OTT Korean dramas, or K-dramas as they have come to be known, is a trend that started some years ago and is picking up pace now. So you have zombie shows like All of Us Are Dead, underdog story Itaewon Class and military drama DP that are based on webtoons.

While webtoons being translated into dramas is not a recent phenomenon, it is a big trend on the rise in the Korean drama industry, Kross Pictures CEO and co-founder Hyunwoo Thomas Kim told PTI.

The production studio and webtoon publishing company, he said, produced The Sound of Your Heart, among the first webtoon-based K-dramas, and is now coming up with A Business Proposal, also a rom-com based on a webtoon adaptation. It is slated to be released in India on Netflix on February 28.

According to Kim, the webtoon art form was born in South Korea around 12 years ago and the local drama industry started adapting them into series only by 2016-17.

Before webtoon, there were ‘manhwa’ and ‘manga’ that mean ‘comics’ in Korean and Japanese, respectively. The Japanese found success by adapting ‘manga’ into ‘anime’, a style of film and television animation of which Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z are the most loved examples.

“Manga in Japan is huge. Subjects vary as per age and interests. To me as a Korean, reading manhwa is nothing unique. It’s how I grew up. Now webtoon, this genre for mobile phones, started with the advent of smartphones. Couple of years later, in 2010 or so, the digital form of manhwa, named webtoon, started being popular in Korea,” Kim told PTI in a Zoom interview from Seoul.

“It’s a matter of time that this will also become a trend in India too, particularly in Bollywood and TV,” Kim said.

The first Indian OTT series based on a Korean webtoon will be a rom-com and the deal could be signed as early as next month.

Indian viewers seem to be lapping up the webtoon adaptations.

Like academic counsellor Amanda Rebeiro who said she fell in love with the fantasy drama comedy “Mystic Pop-Up Bar” and was curious to find out more about it. The 29-year-old said it a whole new world opened up when she discovered the show is a webtoon adaptation.

A still from Mystic Pop-Up Bar. A still from Mystic Pop-Up Bar.

“I liked ‘Mystic Pop-Up Bar’ a lot so I read the webtoon in order to get more stuff on the story. Also, sometimes when the subtitles aren’t translated well in English, you don’t understand the feel of the story. Since webtoons are available in English, it makes the experience so much better,” Jaipur-based Rebeiro told PTI.

Kim Eun-hee, one of South Korea’s most respected writers, developed Kingdom, the first Netflix original Korean series, from her webtoon series The Kingdom of the Gods, which was drawn by Yang Kyung-il.

Netflix favourite Song Kang, who starred in the series version of romance drama Nevertheless with Han So-hee last year, has previously done webtoon adaptation shows like apocalyptic horror Sweet Home, school romance Love Alarm (two seasons), and dance drama Navillera, all available on the streaming service.

Streamer Viki Rakuten too registered a strong presence last year with Yumi’s Cells, a psychological romance webtoon from Naver/Line Webtoon, so much so that it will be back for another chapter.

There are many webtoon shows in the pipeline.

Military drama DP, for instance will return for season two on the streamer. Adapting a webtoon into a K-drama is a “no-brainer”, said Kross Pictures’ Kim, adding that directors love the fact that it offers both script and visualisation.

Military drama DP’s still. Military drama DP’s still.

“In many instances we not use only the written script… directors also prefer to use the pictures (from the webtoon to help set up a scene in the drama).”

Kim, who is also behind India’s first webtoon platform Kross Komics, said he and his team also ensure they choose only those webtoons that have already proven to be successful.

“When we buy the rights to adapt a certain webtoon, we already know how this webtoon did commercially. If tens of lakhs of people have already read it and liked it, it gives the producer a lot of confidence,” he pointed out.

Webtoons are a “very up-to-date” and “collaborative” medium of expression, which are generally featured twice a week, Kim added.

Since its production and distribution is quick, the original author is also able to be in touch with the masses’ reviews.

“It really helps us understand what the general public is liking. Most of the time webtoons are written twice a week or once a week. A lot of times, authors can check the comments from the previous episodes and incorporate the fans’ ideas, likes and dislikes into the next episode. It is highly reflective of the audience tastes,” Kim said.

Rebeiro, who grew up on a steady diet of Marvel and DC Comics, prefers webtoons.

“Webtoons give you more fleshed-out characters. Titles like ‘My ID is Gangnam Beauty’ and ‘Extraordinary You’ are so much better as a webtoon. In the series format, the actors try to show what the character feels through facial expressions. For me, the shading of the eyes and the tilt of the chin drawn in the webtoon works better in connecting with the emotion,” she added.

Webtoon adaptations are on a roll with titles like The Sound of Magic, Tomorrow and Money Game already under development.

Comics have long been inspirations for superhero and fantasy story. But the world of comics, well that’s changing fast in the OTT sector.

‘Thirty-Nine’ K-Drama Will Not Air Episode 7 Next Week and Go on Hiatus

Netflix has Korean drama fans hooked on its romantic drama Thirty-Nine. The K-drama aired on Feb.16 and has aired five episodes so far. For Thirty-Nine, the K-drama tells the story of three high school friends who are now turning forty and looking for love and dealing with the turbulent times life throws at them. K-drama fans will be dismayed to learn Thirty-Nine will not air episode seven as planned and go on hiatus next week.

‘Thirty-Nine’ put on hold for presidential elections

Fans will have to wait one week to see where Cha Mi-jo, Jeong Chan-young, and Jang Joo-hee are headed next after Thirty-Nine Episode 6. According to Soompi, JTBC officially announced on March 4 the K-drama will take a hiatus next week. Fans do not have to worry as there is a common reason. Due to coverage of the presidential elections, Thirty-Nine will not air episode 7 on March 8.

It is common for TV shows and K-dramas to take a hiatus during important scheduled country events. Last year, Hospital Playlist took a one-week hiatus due to the 2022 Qatar World Cup coverage. Fans should not fear as JTBC will instead air a recap special.

On March 9, JTBC’s special will cover episodes one through nine. After the one-week hiatus, Thirty-Nine will continue with its schedule and premiere episode 7 on March 16.

The Netflix K-drama has proven to be an emotional rollercoaster after it broke a cardinal rule and revealed Chan-young’s fate. By Thirty-Nine Episode 6, the characters have come to terms with her decision not to get treatment. The star of the episode is hard to watch as Seon-u’s father visits Mi-jo’s clinic and rudely asks his adopted daughter So-hee why she is there.

After an uncomfortable dinner with the four characters, Mi-jo helps reassure So-hee over drinks. Meanwhile, Joo-hee talks with her mother to find information about Mi-jo’s birth mother but learns it might be best not to when her mother hands her a letter from prison. Mi-jo and Chan-young meet and lament their circumstances.

The next day, So-hee faces a difficult customer at work, and Mi-jo visits Chan-young and tells her they will visit all the time. That night, the three friends hang out and watch K-dramas together. The following day, Mi-jo and Seon-u are driving for a camping trip but learn Joo-hee left her job and returned.

At the same time, Chan-young is visited by Jin-seok, who begs her to let him stay. She unwillingly does when her mother decides to visit and is happy to see him. Mi-jo and Seon-u go to Chan-young’s and have a small party. When the doorbell rings, Mi-jo opens the door to Jinn-seok’s wife. Mi-jo begs her to let Chan-young and Jin-seok alone, at least for today.

Besides the K-drama’s stellar cast, Thirty-Nine has fans hooked on its emotional life journey. The three characters met in school and have been together ever since. Mi-jo was adopted but grew up to run her own dermatology clinic. Joo-hee is a beauty manager at a department store. Chan-young dreamed of being an actor but instead became an acting coach.

All three friends are 39 and on the cusp of turning 40. They soon face looking for true love, repairing family relationships, careers, and the inescapable fate of losing someone they hold dear.

Business Proposal is a light-hearted rom-com filled with meet-cute moments

Based on a webtoon of the same title, Business Proposal is the latest Korean rom-com about a CEO Kang Tae-mu and a cash-strapped employee Shin Ha-ri.

In order to stop his grandfather from setting up more blind dates for him and disturbing his work, Tae-mu goes on a blind date with the intention of marrying the first woman he meets.

Meanwhile, Ha-ri’s friend Jin Young-seo asks her to attend a blind date in her place and to give an impression so bad that the date will reject her.

However, little does Ha-ri know that she will be meeting Tae-mu, who is the CEO of the company where she works. Tae-mu, who is clueless that Ha-ri is his employee, strikes a marriage deal with her.

With the first two of 12 episodes now available for streaming on Netflix, here are four reasons why Business Proposal is a good way to de-stress after a long day.

  1. Ahn Hyo-seop and Kim Se-jeong form an entertaining pair.

Ahn Hyo-seop plays the stoic Tae-mu, who holds high standards at the workplace and couldn’t care less about his love life. Kim Se-jeong plays the hardworking and spirited Ha-ri who cannot seem to escape a life of debts.

As the CEO of a major company, Tae-mu only knows Ha-ri by name as the researcher who came up with a great business idea. He appreciates her working style and the quality of her work. Since Ha-ri does not want to expose her identity for fear of being fired, she assumes another name Shin Geum-hui after Tae-mu finds out she impersonated Young-seo.

Despite how complex this sounds, the premise makes the interactions between the two characters even more amusing and enjoyable. Tae-mu’s hilarious reactions to the little quirks of Ha-ri sit in stark contrast to his cool and indifferent appearance.

  1. How the relationship between Kim Min-kyu’s and Seol In-ah’s characters will develop is exciting.

Apart from Tae-mu and Ha-ri, another couple that is equally eye-catching is Tae-mu’s friend and secretary Cha Sung-hun (Kim Min-kyu) and Ha-ri’s friend Jin Young-seo (Seol In-ah).

Story continues

Young-seo, who believes in fate and dislikes arranged meetings, bumps into Sung-hun one day and falls in love at first sight. On the other hand, Sung-hun sees Young-seo’s interaction with a kid and seems to have taken an interest in her as well.

Although their meetings have been brief so far, it is only a matter of time before the spotlight shifts over to this cute couple. I look forward to seeing how they will establish and deepen their relationship, and how it will affect the relationship between Tae-mu and Ha-ri.

  1. Lee Min-woo (Song Won-seok) will complicate things for Shin Ha-ri.

Song Won-seok plays Ha-ri’s other love interest and friend Lee Min-woo. As she is holding double identities, Ha-ri tries to avoid Min-woo when she is in disguise as Geum-hui, in case he blows her cover.

Although Ha-ri thinks that Min-woo is not interested in her, her gossipy colleagues seem to think otherwise. If this turns out to be true, Min-woo will not only be a threat who might expose her true identity to Tae-mu, but he will also become the love rival of Tae-mu, aka the most pivotal character in a romance drama love triangle.

  1. The scenes are predictable and cliched but they work.

The first two episodes of Business Proposal have been peppered with iconic and, some might say, cringey meet-cute scenes: from bumping into one another, to preventing a dramatic fall down the stairs, to an accidental kiss — you name it, they have it.

But these are the typical scenes that have been tried and proven to work in romance dramas, made better with the attractive cast, their chemistry and the light-heartedness of the story.

As cliched as the scenes may be, you will still end up rooting for the couples, even the low-key BL pairing between Tae-mu and Sung-hun, who, in the words of Tae-mu’s grandfather, are “joined at the hip, using work as an excuse” for their suspiciously close relationship.

New episodes of Business Proposal will be available on Netflix every Monday and Tuesday.
